A vocal commentator on social issues, Maini Mahanta has carved a niche for herself as votary of women’s rights in Assam and Northeast India as a whole. As the founder Editor of ‘Nandini’ the premier women’s monthly in Assamese language in circulation since 2000, Maini has been working for women’s empowerment through the pages of her journal as well as her newspaper columns and television debates. She has so far authored or edited 15 books dealing with women empowerment, crimes against women, and other similar subjects. A post-graduate in Economics from the Gauhati University, Maini has also been into translation, having recently translated an award winning book titled ‘Homemakers Without The Men : Assam’s Widows of Violence’ from English to Assamese.

Her latest publication is ‘Dreams and Dreamlessness’ which is a collection of short stories.
